The Legacy©
~ Jake Jacobsen ~

I came home one day after working hard;
My body was tired and my life felt scarred.
My mind was swirling with the tests of the day,
Was much too tired.... too tired to play.

I remembered a time when life was this way
The challenges so many, I couldn't even pray.
What kept me going was the question that came
Because the road I was traveling; all seemed the same.
The answer wasn’t quick but it finally arrived
My comrades had helped....helped me survive.
Vietnam had tried to rob me its true,
My losses took my mind....and made me blue.

The thought of their deeds was just like fresh air
And a still small voice said....don’t you despair.
Our deeds are alive because You live as our voice,
Our country is strong with its options and choice.
So when life feels scarred by the tests of the day
And you feel too tired....too tired to pray,
Remember those that left you, and what they did
So that you could go on...... go on and live.

Keeping The Course©
~ Jake Jacobsen ~

My past has had its challenges,
but I was taught to keep things strong,
In spite of what confronts me;
doing what’s right and not the wrong.
The demons of my challeged past
Kept appearing everyday
In my daily walk and talk of life
In deeds and what I say.

I struggled with my purpose
And my direction seemed so dim,
The drugs that seemed to ease my pain,
Were actually very slim.
The real world was more challenging
Than the war that I was part;
My comrades saved me through it all,
due to purity of heart.

I knew always where I stood,
Among those brave and true,
The team came first above us all,
Not just the me and you.
All the years of looking
And searching for the key,
The simple truth lies within us all-
The we and not just me.

So I mended from my scars of war
And looked to find my place,
That I could carry on these thoughts,
Within the human race.
As time went on my strength came back,
And my path seemed all too clear,
My comrades were inside of me,
What could I really fear.

Each day my life seems challenged,
By all that’s in my past,
I hear of talk and things
And wonder what will last.
So I again revisit those lessons,
Stored deep within my heart,
That the greater team, is where its at
And I am just a part.

Now if your walk seems heavy
And life’s direction is unclear,
Remember those that paid the price,
To wipe away each tear.
Our land is strong because of what they did
So many years ago-
Our challenge is to be true to course,
To make America so.
